Campaign Wins

Two City PRFC staff members work on planting a large young tree together, with one member taking the burlap bag off the tree's root ball and the other mixing biochar with dirt in the hole.

Real change happens block by block, tree by tree, and neighbor by neighbor.

Since launching during Earth Month last year, the Cool the City coalition has been working alongside Richmond residents to expand tree canopy, build community knowledge, and create new opportunities for green careers. Together, we’ve already begun to make a measurable difference:

  • 1,100+ trees and shrubs planted in neighborhoods experiencing high levels of urban heat

  • 850+ community members engaged through education, outreach, and volunteer events

  • 26 graduates of agroforestry workforce development programs

  • 5 new green jobs created in Richmond

The stories below highlight some of the many ways this work is taking root across the city.
